Warm Springs Residence
Project Description
This project began with an extensive redesign of an existing Warm Springs Avenue home by Gravitas architects. BRECKON landdesign was hired to provide a comprehensive landscape master plan. For architecture and landscape, designers held to an understated, classic aesthetic using elegant forms and high-quality building materials. This answered the owner’s desire for more contemporary living space and amenities while honoring the historic fabric of the neighborhood. The site plan called for a resurfacing of the original entry drive with concrete pavers, and expanded the paved area at the garage threshold for added maneuverability and parking. An existing pool, naturally heated by the geothermal springs for which Warm Springs Avenue is named, was refurbished, its interior surfaces cast in a darker hue for a more dramatic, updated appearance. The pool deck area, paved in travertine, was expanded and raised to match the finished floor elevation of the house. This resulted in a generous outdoor living space that flowed between indoors and out. A new, partially enclosed pool house was incorporated into the backyard plan, along with a custom-designed pergola of rustic timber that ran along the western edge of the pool deck. This offered a welcoming sense of enclosure for lounging, dining and entertaining. From the pool deck, the plan steps down to ample green space. At the far corner of the yard, designers created a recessed patio, surfaced in gravel, that featured an elevated gas campfire. Steps running along along the north edge of this patio echo the upper grade transition, and provide easy access as well as casual seating opportunities. Shrub and perennial plantings in beds and glazed terra-cotta planters add color and interest to the lawn and pool deck areas. At the yard’s perimeter, low stone walls topped with slatted timber fencing provide screening and privacy. Architect Construction Partners Year Completed
