Project Description BRECKON landdesign worked with Boise School District administrators and school staff to plan and design new outdoor classroom spaces at five elementary schools in Boise - Horizon, Cynthia Mann, Riverside, Liberty and White Pine. All of these schools were originally constructed with earthen berms surrounding the buildings that had degraded over time. The design for these projects included removal of the berms and associated landscaping and repair of the exposed building surfaces. The berms were replaced with outdoor learning spaces, with concrete seat walls and picnic tables, shade canopies, and encased whiteboards for instructors. Plantings are a combination of fast-growing grasses and perennials with drip irrigation systems. The projects were funded through the ARPA ESSER program, which provided grants to schools for outdoor learning areas. Horizon Elementary was the pilot project and was completed in 2022. The other four schools were done in 2024.
